What an AI data vendor is
An AI data vendor acquires or licenses data from companies and supplies it onward, mostly to AI labs, on its own account. The vendor is the counterparty: you sign with the vendor, and the vendor signs separately with its own customers.
Vendors usually prepare the data themselves. They extract it, remove personal and customer details, and package it into datasets, training tasks or environments that their customers use to train and evaluate models.
How it pays
Most vendors pay a fixed license fee once the data is delivered and accepted. Some add a revenue share on later sales or offer recurring payments for refreshed data. The vendor earns the difference between what it pays you and what its customers pay it, and that figure is not normally disclosed to the seller.

What to check before you sign
- Who removes personal and customer details, when, and whether it happens before the data leaves your systems.
- Whether the license is exclusive or perpetual, and for how long you are blocked from licensing the same records again.
- The field of use, and whether the vendor may resell or sublicense the data, and to whom.
- When you are paid and what acceptance condition has to be met first.
- Whether raw copies are deleted after delivery, by when, and with what written confirmation.
This is general guidance, not legal advice. Your counsel should review any license before you sign.
