What a data marketplace is

A data marketplace lists or licenses a seller's data to buyers and takes a cut or a revenue share when a buyer pays. This group also includes licensing agents that license content on the owner's behalf.

On some platforms you list the data yourself and set the price. On others the platform finds the buyer, sets or negotiates the price and asks you to approve each deal.

How it pays

You are paid your share after the buyer pays the platform. The platform's cut, any listing or subscription fees, minimum payouts and the payment schedule differ by platform and are set in its terms.

What to check before you sign

  • The platform's cut, and any listing, subscription or withdrawal fees.
  • Who sets the price, and whether you approve each buyer and each deal.
  • How long after the buyer pays you receive your share.
  • Whether the licenses granted to buyers are perpetual, sublicensable or survive the end of your account.
  • Whether you can withdraw data or opt out of future deals later.

This is general guidance, not legal advice. Your counsel should review any license before you sign.
